Why do we need vitamin B1?

Vitamin B1 helps us get energy from the carbohydrates we eat. The more carbohydrates, the more vitamin B1 we need to release the energy from it. It also keeps our nerves and heart working properly.

Sources of Vitamin B1

Foods which are high in vitamin B1 include cereals, green vegetables, nuts, and pork.

What happens if I eat too much?

It is harmlessly broken down by the kidney and excreted in urine.

What happens if I don't eat enough?

A lack of vitamin B1 can cause a disease called Beri-beri, which affects the nervous system.

How much should I have?

You should have about 1.4 mg (1 400 µg) per day.
