Why do we need vitamin D?

Vitamin D is needed for growth, healthy teeth and bones and to absorb calcium from your gut into your blood.

Sources of vitamin D

Foods high in vitamin D include fish and milk. We can make vitamin D from the sun when it shines on our skin.

What happens if I eat too much?

Mild excess of vitamin D causes weakness, weight loss and stunted growth. Severe forms can cause brain damage.

What happens if I don't eat enough?

If you don't eat enough vitamin D the softening of bones due to a deficiency in calcium and phosphorous as less is absorbed. In children this is commonly known as "Rickets" or in adults it is commonly known as "Osteomalacia."

How much should I have?

You should have at least 5 µg / day
