Vitamin K

Why do we need vitamin K?

Vitamin K is essential in our blood to make it clot.

Sources of vitamin K

Vitamin K is found in green leafy vegetables, liver, tomatoes , egg yolks, vegetable oils and skins from fruit and vegetables.

What happens if I eat too much?

Too much can cause jaundice (skin and organs turn yellow). A second effect of too much is the death of red blood cells, causing anaemia..

What happens if I don't eat enough?

The blood is unable to clot.

How much should I have?

As it can be made in the intestines, there are no recommended daily amounts, but 10 µg/day are recommended per kilo of weight so most adults require about 60 µg - 80 µg per day. 14 year olds will therefore need between 40 µg - 70 µg per day depending on their weight. New born babies are sometimes deficient in vitamin K, so are given it at birth.
