Why do we need iodine?

Iodine is a trace element. Iodine helps to make thyroid hormones, and is needed for normal growth and development.

Sources of iodine

Iodine is found in iodized salt, seafood and crops grown in iodine rich soil.

What happens if I eat too much?

Iodine is not absorbed

What happens if I don't eat enough?

The deficiency symptoms are Goitre (enlargement of the thyroid gland). If a women is pregnant and her diet is lacking in iodine, her baby will be at a higher risk for mental retardation, and slower growth than normal.

How much should I have?

We need 0.15 mg (150 µg) of iodine a day.
