Why do we need magnesium?

Magnesium is a major mineral. It is vital in many chemical reactions in the body and is needed to make your nerves and muscles work properly. It is needed for a normal heart beat. Magnesium works with calcium to make your bones healthy and strong.

Sources of magnesium

Magnesium is found in dark green leafy vegetables, milk, meat, nuts, dried beans, bananas,wheat bran and whole grains.

What happens if I eat too much?

There are no problems associated with an excess of magnesium, as an excess stops magnesium being absorbed.

What happens if I don't eat enough?

The result of having too little is depression, irritability, muscle weakness, cramps, tiredness, abnormal heart beat and in extreme cases heart attack.

How much should I have?

The daily recommended amount for a girl is 270 mg (270 000µg) and for a boy it is 300 mg (300 000µg) per day.
