Why do we need phosphorus?

Phosphorus is a major mineral needed to build the cells in our bodies. It is also important to make healthy bones and teeth. Phosphorus is used in the production of energy in the body.

Sources of phosphorus

Phosphorus is found in most foods, but particularly fish, meat, poultry, diary products, eggs, peas, legumes (dried beans) and nuts.

What happens if I eat too much?

Too much could result in an upset in the body's calcium/phosphorus balance.

What happens if I don't eat enough?

Too little may cause calcium to come out of bones resulting in osteoporosis (weak bones).

How much should I have?

You need between 550 mg (550 000µg)- 800 mg (800 000µg)a day
