Why do we need potassium?

Potassium is a major mineral which is needed for muscle contraction and nerve impulses. Potassium helps with the proper functioning of the heart and kidneys. Along with sodium, potassium helps in the control of blood pressure and the water balance in the cells. High levels of potassium and low levels of sodium lowers your blood pressure.

Sources of potassium

Potassium is found in fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, nuts, and poultry.

What happens if I eat too much?

In a normal diet it is very unlikely to eat too much potassium, but if potassium supplements are taken, high levels are poisonous.

What happens if I don't eat enough?

The deficiency symptoms are weakness and nausea, tiredness and irrational behavior. Excessively low levels of potassium can cause severe heart problems including heart attacks.

How much should I have?

We need 3.5g (3500 mg)a day of potassium.
