Sodium (Na)

Why do we need sodium?
Sodium is a major mineral, which along with potassium, is needed to control
your blood pressure and the water balance in the cells of the body. It
also helps in muscle contraction and sending nerve impulses. The amount
of sodium in the body fluids is controlled by the kidneys.
Sources of sodium

Sodium is found in table salt, soy sauce, bread, cheese, bacon, ham,
fruit, crisps and sweets.
What happens if I eat too much?
Too much sodium can result in high blood pressure which increases the
risk of strokes and coronary heart disease. It is also a factor in Oedema
( fluid retention ), and kidney stones. The more sodium you have, the
more potassium you need to contradict its effects.
What happens if I don't eat enough?
Sodium deficiency is unlikely, but if it does occur symptoms include
thirst, cramps, fatigue and weakness.
How much should I have?
0 .575 -1.6 g (575 - 1600 mg) per day.
