Why do we need zinc?

Zinc is a trace element. It is important for the healing of wounds, and normal growth and development. It is also needed for a healthy reproductive and immune system. Zinc plays a role in tasting and smelling properly. Zinc is also needed in carbohydrate metabolism and replication of DNA.

Sources of zinc

Zinc is found in red meat, poultry, fish, bread, cereal, milk and whole grains.

What happens if I eat too much?

Too much can cause intestinal irritation, it may interfere with the use of copper in the body.

What happens if I don't eat enough?

Deficiency symptoms in adults include a loss of appetite, skin and hair problems, slower healing of wounds, more infections, altered smell and taste. In pregnancy and infants a low level of zinc can cause reduced growth and development.

How much should I have?

We should have 15 mg (15 000 µg)of zinc a day.
